CHUNGII

ORNAMENTAL BLUE
BAMBOO

(Bambusa chungii)

Chungii bamboo is a beautiful ornamental bamboo featuring powdery blue/ white culms. Chungii bamboo will naturally grow up to 8-10 metres in height and can be easily trimmed down in height if need be (read maintenance tips here). Though Chungii would usually be used on large blocks or acreage where trimming is not necessary. Barbelletta is the smaller blue variety for smaller gardens.

It has a natural fairly upright growth habit, and minimal foliage down low as it matures. The natural footprint size of the clump is 1.5-2mtrs but this can be reduced with planting closer together for a grove or screening. This wonderful species can be planted into narrower garden beds or maintained smaller to suit your needs, down to a minimum of 1mtr, but please note it is still a big bamboo and cannot be compared to the narrowness of a Gracilis screening bamboo for example. Plant as a single feature or a dense screening solution.

Clumping bamboo grow circular, so plant them the same distance apart as the width you have available. Eg. if your planting trench is 1.2mtrs wide, you would plant them 1.2mtrs apart to form a dense screen. The narrower the space, the closer you plant the bamboo together.

Chungii bamboo is incredibly quick growing, and can be fully grown in 2-3 years if established well. Or achieve quicker growth if you purchase more established sizes! It is low maintenance and drought tolerant once established.

Follow our bamboo planting guide (provided with your purchase) to achieve the best results. The guides are helpful and easy to follow, and assist you in achieving the best results in the shortest amount of time. Most of the effort in growing your bamboos is preparation and the first few months after planting.
